THE EMV VAULT!
VINTERSORG - THE FOCUSING BLUR
Chaos, order and complexity! Mr. Vintersorg went for it and aimed high with this album.
Newton, Einstein, Galilei, W.H. Auden. Dark matter, cosmos, philosophy, science, nature. Black metal, progressive rock, folk, narrations (and dashes of electronica). The scope of ambition and expression was monumental. Genre-shattering in every way, this album was also the only album featuring no Swedish language.
Hiring Steve DiGiorgio and Asgeir Mickelson once again was a wise move, as the rhythm section is beyond fantastic and key to the compelling and sophisticated character of the material. The eclectic mix of styles works rather well, yet in some cases I guess a producer might have elevated some of the tracks.
Vintersorg’s main trademark, for me, has always been the ability to make epic and complex arrangements come out catchy sounding.
An extremely experimental release. More is more, doesn’t necessarily equal better end results when you’re going for something grand. Initially I was overwhelmed by the approach but looking back on it today, I feel this album could’ve achieved more if some of the arrangements were a bit more streamlined.
